Understanding the Cycle of Anxiety
The 4 Stages of the Cycle
The Trigger: An event, place, or worrisome thought sparks an initial feeling of danger.
Physical & Mental Symptoms: Your body reacts with a fast heartbeat, sweating, or racing, negative thoughts.
Avoidance: You run away, skip the task, or use safety habits (like staying near an exit) to stop the discomfort and make attempts to control outcomes. This may be an active mind, rumination, about the issue.
Temporary Relief: Your anxiety drops right away, which tricks your brain into thinking avoidance was a good choice.
Because you never face the fear, your brain believes the situation is truly dangerous. The next time you face it, your anxiety returns even worse. You can learn more about this pattern through the detailed guides at

Specialized Anxiety Counselling in Edmonton
Living with Anxiety can be so uncomfortable and limiting. Anxiety is treatable with therapy and can remit. A key element to overcoming Anxiety is leaning into the discomfort or feared situation and understanding your own power. Clients often find me saying “are you in danger or uncomfortable in this situation.” Exposing yourself to the fear stimulus allows the brain to learn to re-calibrate what it perceives as a threat and what it perceives as normal life events. At Heights Psychological, we understand how overwhelming this cycle can be, and we are here to help you recover, using evidence based treatments like Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to treat the Anxiety.
